At 6:00 AM, the air is crisp, the light is soft, and the landscape is waking up. Today, just a short ten-minute drive from my home in Sierra Vista, I found myself at the trailhead of Miller Canyon, one of the true crown jewels of the Huachuca Mountains.
There is a rhythm to a successful morning of birding that often goes overlooked in the rush to find a target bird species. After a moderate 30-minute hike, I stopped. I didn't reach for my camera immediately; I just stood still and listened.
In my years of guiding, I have found that listening is the most important skill a birder can possess. The forest speaks long before it reveals itself.
After a few moments of intentional silence, I heard it—a distinct, melodic call cutting through the canopy. I followed the sound upward, scanning the towering conifer. About 40 feet up, perched effortlessly against the morning sky, was the target: a beautiful male Flame-colored Tanager.
Seeing this bird is always a thrill. While I didn't manage to capture the perfect, National Geographic-quality shot, the experience was fun. Watching that brilliant flash of color against the deep green needles is a memory that stays with you.
While hiking back to the car, a stunning Flame Skimmer was visible right next to the trail. Coming back to the same hunting perch over and over allowed me to snap some nice pics before he took off for the cool stream nearby.
No fires in Miller Canyon, only Flames!
Moments like this are exactly why I am so passionate about sharing this region with fellow birders. Miller Canyon is just one example of the incredible biodiversity we have right in our backyard. From the high-altitude pine forests to the desert scrub, Southeast Arizona acts as a bridge for unique species you won't find anywhere else in the United States.
Whether you are a seasoned birder looking to track down a specialty species or someone just beginning to appreciate the avian wonders of the desert southwest, there is always something waiting to be discovered in the canyons.
